Some Repairs and Maintenance

During my recovery of shoulder injury I have been doing some much needed maintenance and repairs to a few things.

Firstly a rolling pin fix for Belinda of a rolling pin bought by Sue just after we got married. Its a solid 12" x 2" dia which has/had bearings and steel shaft giving free running of the roller between the handles.
The timber shrinkage, years of use had caused the cup and cage bearings to become loose with one small bearing falling out of the cage.

I sourced new sealed bearings from CBC Bearings at Moorebank, turned up a new shaft out of stainless steel, this was to give a better shoulder for the bearing to sit against. The old shaft had little to offer even after turning the spline away which I had to remove to allow the sealed bearing to slide to the shoulder.

The bearings fitted snug but still due to soft timber around the hole and recess I had to make so it would seat into I had to use epoxy to secure it. She is happy with the result.

My Scheppac Belt/disc sander has sat loose on the top of my bench for two years it became a case of secure it or have it end up on the floor if knocked or leant on. So a couple of pieces of MDF either side did the trick. The dust hose attachment was to small for the 4" dusty hose off my Hare and Forbes  1hp dusty.
I had made up a quick fix using joiner tape etc but it had become loose and kept falling out. So a modification and fitting a 4" outlet means the hose is now a dream to use.

I have edited the above in regards to Nathan's comment and question.  14th Jan 2014I used a Hare and Forbes reducer I cut off the small section flush and opened the hole to be a snug fit to slide over the Scheppac outlet. Removing the Sheppac front cover I drilled 4 6mm holes and using threaded screws and nuts secured the larger 4" outlet replaced the cover. it now means I can use the 4" dusty hose direct and it does not fall off.

 My 6" cheap grinder used to dance the "Shimey" even though secured to the bench top caused by the centre bush being out of round on my Pink HSS wheel. I removed the bush turned up a new whole one made up a new MDF base board, removed the rubber feet and remounted the wheel and grinder. Next was repair to the bent arm of the grinder tool rest I had some 1" 1/2 x 1/4" flat steel I marked out and milled the slot required drilled the hole ad remounted that also.

Ginger Bread House's

Sue for many years has made Ginger Bread and Ginger Bread Houses this came about due to my dad's love and request for Ginger Bread. Our three children took to it with vigour and devoured it with relish which delighted their Pop, and so it came to pass that this to became a family tradition. In years gone by its only due to humidity that Sue hasn't made them as the Ginger Bread becomes soggy and the house unstable. 

In doing these Sue has taken to placing Bamboo skewers through roof to give support as the size of family grew so did the house and it also prevents soggy sag.

This year two have been made a smaller one for her mum in the nursing home and one for our family to enjoy.

A Pen-turn-thon

While Sue has been busy, I took to making and repairing a few pens some I wasn't happy with as well as making a few others kits I had had for some 12 months. My right shoulder I had some how strained including the neck muscles making moving about very had indeed doing this kept me buy while taking my mind off the ache and tenderness. Much deep massage was required along with some magic cream obtained from a local source.

Not everything in pen making goes smooth the Camphor cross cut Bolt Action I had made I had removed to much from the Camphor section making the nib project out to far so a new centre of Camphor was turned at the right length.








A Fountain Pen a Baroness I made some time ago and sold recently had formed a crack this is a replacement again in Tassie Blackwood hope the owner is pleased with this one.







 
During turning of any material including pens be it wood or acrylic a catch or tool dig in can happen or even material movement. I had such with an acrylic which left half of it intact. I turned the remaining portion  to a clean edge and drilled and fitted a piece of False Ivory this came out better than I had imagined it makes the colour of the top half stand out much more than they would have as a whole.

The Over Under Shot Gun I did also cracked this I think was due to to thin a wall and heat of the day at the recent Luddenham Bi-Centenary or it may have been dropped by someone handling it I am still finishing this one photo's as soon as its reassembled.

I ventured out into the 40C and finished polishing the new cap timber this time Tassie Myrtle Burl.

Lavender Opal matched set of a Sierra Stylus Gold and Gun metal and a Sierra Gold and Gun metal Pencil. Timberbits supplied the Pen kit while Ian Dorney of Hunter Valley pens supplied the pencil kit.

A Sierra Stylus Chrome with English Oak. 




 Black Op's Bolt Action using a black and Yellow acrylic this will be hard to find in the dark.

Quilts for Brodie and Christian

During the year our grandson Christian who got into Spyro a gaming and cartoon character  and Brodie into Mickey Mouse having been with mum and dad to Disney Land. Sue spent many hours designing and making the quilts both which have alternate sides.

Cradle Bags

Sue has been busy with a number of projects which have taken some time these four Cradle Bags just one of them. Two are for Lor's and Wayne's grand daughters one of our own grand daughter Bianca and one going to a charity organisation.

These unique little girls toy are amazing as they close up to look like a hand bag yet when open reveal a little baby doll inside.
